The Dragon and the Eagle exhibition
The Dragon and the Eagle exhibition
“The Dragon and the Eagle: American Traders in China, A Century of Trade from 1784 to 1900” is a new exhibition held at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum.
The dragon and the eagle have long been known as the symbols of China and America respectively.
The exhibition mainly outlines the history of Sino-American trade.
It is themed around the relationship between “the oldest empire” of China and the “newest republic of America”.
It features the sailing materials and artifacts that were used between the Chinese and the Americans during trading and shipping.
It also contains paintings, porcelain, furniture, papers, instruments and other objects that display the commercial interaction between the two nations.
The exhibition takes you straight to the pages of 18th-century history.
It will make you feel all the surrounding tension between the complicated geopolitics of both China and America that was present at that time and the centuries after that.
There are different sections in the exhibition with titles like “Dreaming of the East” and “Exotic Tastes”.
The exhibition displays collections of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum and several US museums. Some of them include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Winterthur Museum, the Peabody Essex Museum, Harvard Business School and some private collectors.
